musings about food, travel, creativity and life

Wisconsin Winners❣️

Here we are in Madison, Wisconsin, enjoying all the summer fun this town offers.

The weekly Saturday Farmers’ Market around the Capitol building is one of my favorite activities.  All the shoppers and lookers walk counter clockwise around the square, slowly, which makes it easier to stop and taste all the samples of cheese and sausage, nuts and pesto, and hot and spicy cheese bread, and to savor the beauty and bounty the neighboring farmlands provide.

And as serendipity would have it, just after we completed our most recent market visit, we saw the Annual Naked Bike Ride…yes, you read it right…oh, my…moving right along…

Just outside Madison many adventures await. One mini-trip we took was to the new Firefly Grove Park in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, where Thomas Dambo, of Denmark, has added to his collection of wooden trolls with Mama Rosa.  She is a 25 foot, 4000 pound sweet creation made from recycled wood and trees; the “flowers” she is sniffing are actually discarded street lights!  To find out more about Dambo’s trolls, and to see if any might be near you, check out his website: thomasdambo..com.

Another adventure was to visit the headquarters of Epic, a large company that provides healthcare software (like My Chart) to medical facilities around the world.

Each of the on-site six “campuses” has a different theme, design and architecture.  For example, there’s a Storybook Campus based on elements of Alice in Wonderland, the Wizard of Oz and other stories.  All of the buildings contain local artwork chosen by the founder-CEO and her art staff.  The themed buildings and artwork are all aimed at inspiring creativity and a friendly “up” work environment for its over 14,000 employees.

This time ‘round we walked around the gardens and enjoyed the sculptures and seeing the cow-themed bicycles that employees were riding from building to building.  We even hopped onto a cow-themed large golf-cart to get back to our car; the horn was a “moo.”

If you ever find yourself in Wisconsin (why not?!), consider visiting Epic.  An on-line reservation is required for the self-guided tours of the various campus buildings.  For more information, check out epic.com..

So…there you have it…a little “hit” of Wisconsin. Add a few cheese curds, a bratwurst or two and a scoop of frozen custard along the way, and you’re good to go. On Wisconsin🧀🌭🍦❣️

  • Thanks Lynn. We went to see Thomas Dambo’s work in Wauwatosa. Fun to see a live version of his work and then to look at all the creations he made around the globe. Soo humorous and artistic.

  • To which I would add to Wisconsin Wonders a prized photo of those daring Naked Bikers. To each his own…
Here in Sunny San Rafael where Bay Area Life is zesty.
    Onward!
